The Alliance Theatre Atlanta 2025 season is officially here—and it’s setting the bar high with a lineup that balances bold world premieres, award-winning talent, and innovative storytelling for all ages. With a rich mix of family-friendly productions and deeply resonant narratives, this 56th season is a cultural must-watch.
Kicking off the excitement is the world premiere of Millions, running from May 10 through June 15, 2025, on the Coca-Cola Stage. Based on the celebrated novel and film by Frank Cottrell Boyce, this heartwarming musical fable follows two brothers, their newly widowed father, a train robber, and perhaps—even—a miracle. With a book by Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone, The Prom), a moving score by Adam Guettel (The Light in the Piazza), and direction from Broadway heavyweight Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof), Millions promises a theatrical experience that’s both playful and profound. It’s a major highlight of the Alliance Theatre Atlanta 2025 lineup, especially for families seeking meaningful entertainment.
In February, the stage shifts to Bust, a searing new drama from Pulitzer Prize finalist Zora Howard (Stew). Presented in partnership with Goodman Theatre and others, this world premiere—running from February 13 to March 16, 2025—explores the tense and tender dynamics between neighbors, community, and law enforcement. Directed by the visionary Lileana Blain-Cruz (The Skin of Our Teeth), Bust captures a single evening on a Southern porch that spirals into a gripping reflection on race and responsibility.
June brings the experimental joy of Babble Lab (June 22–July 28), created by Autumn Ness and directed by Sarah Agnew in collaboration with the Children’s Theatre Company. Specifically designed for early learners, this sensory-rich premiere invites children to explore language, movement, and curiosity in an engaging new way.
From August 2–11, the Alliance presents Something Moving: A Meditation on Maynard, a tribute to Atlanta’s history by celebrated local playwright Pearl Cleage. Written for the 50th anniversary of Maynard Jackson’s historic election as Atlanta’s first Black mayor, the production is both a meditation and a celebration of Black leadership in the South.
Other standout productions in the 2025 season include:
The Mountaintop by Katori Hall (August 30–September 22), a fictional reimagining of Martin Luther King Jr.’s final night, directed by Tinashe Kajese-Bolden
The Chinese Lady by Lloyd Suh (September 18–October 13), a poetic look at the first Chinese woman to immigrate to America
The beloved holiday classic A Christmas Carol (November 9–December 24)
Business Ideas (November 16–December 15), a sharp generational comedy by Milo Cramer, winner of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition
A world premiere adaptation of Doctor De Soto (January 18–March 2, 2025), based on William Steig’s award-winning book and adapted by Idris Goodwin
The Reservoir (March 29–May 4, 2025) by Jake Brasch, a co-production with the Denver Center and Geffen Playhouse, exploring healing, family, and identity
For the youngest audiences, the Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young will feature four productions tailored for children ages newborn to five: The Curious Cardinal, Knock, Knock, Gimme Please, and Dinosaur. These immersive performances blend play with performance, creating interactive experiences for Atlanta’s tiniest theatergoers and their caregivers.
Throughout the season, the Alliance continues its commitment to nurturing emerging voices through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of both Southern creativity and national artistic innovation.
