The Death of the HBCU

A little over 20 years ago, I came to Morehouse College.  Being from a small town in Oklahoma, the prospect of being able to matriculate at such a powerhouse was amazing.  To this day, I STILL love my DEAR OLD MOREHOUSE.

While I need to do a better job at supporting my Historically Black College, I also have the opportunity to talk about HBCU's in general.  NOTICE in advance that I said, in general.  Sure, there is the old saying that a bad apple can ruin the bunch.  But there is also an existing observation that there are more and more bad apples in a smaller bunch.

With that, the majority of HBCU's will die.  Only the strong will survive.  The majority are on that slow sizzling death.  Most of them know, but just are sliding into the abyss slowly but surely.

I was blessed to have a scholarship.  But I can remember my fellow Morehouse brothers complaining consistently about issues such as Financial Aid.  But even with a "financial" pass, I do remember occasions where food in the cafeteria was "...take it or leave it" or pompous attitudes were given while picking up mail.  Was it that the hearts of HBCU staff were so hardened after years of arrogant students never reciprocated respect?  Was it that they felt they were underpaid?  At the time, I never knew.

Today, as my daughter matriculates South Carolina State, I am constantly reminded of the following:

  1. Financial Aid Nightmares
  2. Customer DISservice
  3. Short-tempered staff
  4. Staff with an entitlement and with an obligation to turf inquiries to others
  5. Expectations that we should expect less, or what we get is what we get.
  6. A general "FU#$%^&*()  IT" attitude from most people answering the phone.  (Why should I have the feeling that Shaneekqua is sitting on the other line popping her gum and itching to get back to her Facebook and Instagram account?)

Along with criticism and challenge comes opportunity.  I thoroughly believe that in the situations where we've escalated through the ranks to get issues resolved, that higher-ranking officials at South Carolina State have been very receptive in fixing issues.  We've been called back, emailed, and our issues were generally resolved.

But WHY did it take all of that time and effort to get that far?

HBCU's, generally, are one of the most expensive schools to pick for a student.  A lot of them are private and/or are dependant upon a "brand" that throughout the years, has maintained their enrollment.  HBCU's seem to also have been the recipients of government and philanthropic financial assistance, which helps to keep the lights on.

I'd be one to hypothesize that MAYBE, the golden years of HBCU's has passed.  Let me clarify.  I'm talking about the Golden years of prosperity or a sense of well-being where school leadership did not have to worry about how the student and their tuition-paying parents were being treated.  I'm referring to the retirement of those school officials who believed that working in Financial Aid could mean nasty treatment of those simply asking for assistance on their bill, and especially those concerned students scared that their grades and time invested will go to waste.  I'm referring to the good riddance of pompous attitudes that are often passed down from predecessors who knew no other way but to offer sub-standard service (like the Blacks who attend the school deserve second best).  I'm referring to the death of the poor mentalities and treatment of students... the same students who can sign on the dotted line for technical schools, or other opportunities to PAY someone for an education.  I'm referring to the obsolescence of sub-standard academic offerings, where degree offerings fall off of the map after a student has declared and put in work.  I'm talking about the overly-confident, self-defending arrogance from schools barely making accreditation, and of those who put more time into considering what Homecoming will be like this year, instead of what Homecoming COULD be for future students.

HBCU's.  Grow up or die.

Consider the opportunity that you have to make a difference in these students' lives.  Or simply retire from the position of being a stagnant scrooge, who will eventually be sucked up by a new world that education will grow and evolve to become.

Atlanta Jazz Festival Adds Afro-Cuban Punch to Lineup

The City of Atlanta will do big things again with this year's Atlanta Jazz Festival. Music, in general, AND Jazz specifically, has had a clear history of permeating all races and backgrounds.  Now, by adding a strong Afro-Cuban artist lineup, the Atlanta Jazz Festival increases it's strength as a multicultural and international event.

The 36th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival is presented by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs, a division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs.

“This year’s Atlanta Jazz Festival will truly be a multicultural event,” enthuses Camille Russell Love, Director of the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. “We have artists coming in from around the world to perform. We are especially excited to present three groups with Hispanic roots who will be playing jazz flavored with Afro-Cuban rhythms, Salsa, Caribbean influences and vibrant Latin beats. Join the party and come hear the magnificent music of the Miguel Zenón Quartet, Río Negro and the Aruán Ortiz Quartet at the festival in Piedmont Park over Memorial Day Weekend, May 25-27.”

Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation, Miguel Zenón has also developed a unique voice as a composer and as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Latin American Folkloric Music and Jazz. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Zenón has released seven recordings as a leader including Rayuela (2012) and the Grammy Nominated Alma Adentro (2011). As a sideman he has worked with jazz luminaries such as The SFJAZZ Collective, Charlie Haden, David Sánchez, The Mingus Big Band, Bobby Hutcherson, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner and Steve Coleman.

Miguel Zenón Quartet will perform on the Georgia Lottery International Stage on 5/27 @ 6:30 pm

Miguel Zenon QuartetZenón is a multiple Grammy Nominee and has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, as well as gracing the cover of Downbeat Magazine. Was there ever any ever doubt that an infectious party starter like the video for Spree Wilson's "Right One | Wrong Time" would premiere with one of the year's best parties? At the jam-packed and hallowed hip-hop grounds of Stankonia Studios, Spree Wilson debuted the visuals for his new EP's lead single to a rapturous audience. Hosted by Maurice Garland and GRAMMY-nominated The Flush (who worked extensively on "Life in Technicolor"), the party was a throwback to Atlanta's bass music movement of the '90s, just like the singer-rapper-producer-multi-instrumentalist's new track.

Black Atlanta Family Feature: The Tillman's

Too many times, the media and news outlets are quicker to post news about the number of murders, robberies, and rappers who fought each other.  We as people are naturally inclined to run to the dramatic episodes of life.

The events of life though, are much more comprehensive than that.  We challenge AJC to front page news like the following Family Story.  We challenge local TV and News Shows to feature more positive.  And yes, we CHALLENGE BET and TVOne to show more family related news as inspiration for families sticking together and beating the odds of today's paradigms of broken families led by struggling single moms and absent fathers.

I digress.

So today, we take the time to congratulate and honor the Tillmans.  You may have read about Gabriel Tillman here on BlackAtlanta.com, but in delving deeper, his younger brother and sister are on paths to great athletic, scholastic, and spiritual achievement also.

One of the highlights of the conversation is when he said he was confronted by a a guy who was "testy and chesty" and said his girl had announced to him that he was going to marry Uncle Charlie. As Uncle Charlie started to get a little nervous, the guy announced that his girl was his six year old daughter.

Uncle Charlie is loved by all!

More on Uncle Charlie Wilson

The Natural. This simple phrase eloquently captures the essence of Charlie Wilson.

That essence is currently commanding center stage with the sparkling ballad “My Love Is All I Have.” No one slam-dunks a ballad like Wilson, the Grammy-nominated multi-talent behind the 15-week Billboard Urban Adult Contemporary chart-topper “You Are.” And that truth remains undisputed with “My Love Is All I Have.” A top five Urban AC hit after only five weeks, the fast-rising track is the lead single from Wilson’s fourth solo album Love, Charlie through P Music/RCA Records. The set — fittingly slated for release Jan. 29, Wilson’s birthday — is currently available for preorder at all digital retailers.

With “My Love Is All I Have,” Wilson once again brings to the forefront the elegant simplicity and amazing vocals that still have a strong foothold in today’s pop, dance and hip-hop oriented world. “I poured my heart into Love, Charlie,” says Wilson, who began working on the album last January. “With this album, I didn’t want to be on the road and recording simultaneously. I wanted to take my time. The game plan was basic: each song needed to have single potential—or it didn’t make the record.”

Thus, “My Love Is All I Have” isn’t the only gem on Love, Charlie. The 12-song album opens with the inspirational, tone-setting centerpiece, “If I Believe.” Both testimony and autobiography, the piano-driven track starts slowly and builds to a crescendo, ending on a beautifully sustained note carried solely by Wilson. “I can always count on you / You never let me down / My trust in you will never leave because you know my destiny / So I know if I believe / I can do anything,” sings Wilson.

“I can’t go anywhere without my God,” explains Wilson of the song’s meaning. “This is about my faith in him.”

The singer/songwriter next shifts from inspirational into an easygoing groove on “I Still Have You,” reminiscent of his 2009 hit single “There Goes My Baby.” Wilson further displays his versatility on “I Think I’m in Love,” accented by colorful doo-wop harmonies. Other noteworthy tracks include the standard-to-be ballad “Our Anniversary,” infectious love ode “A Million Ways to Love You,” funk-thumping party jam “My Baby” and the swing dance track “Ooh Wee.” Wilson also teams up with another R&B titan on the seductive “Whisper,” featuring Keith Sweat. Overall, Wilson has never sounded stronger both vocally and creatively.

“Love, Charlie represents some of Charlie’s finest work to date,” says manager Michael Paran, President/CEO of P Music Group. “It continues to not only show his growth but the strength of the writing/production team we’ve amassed at P Music Group.”

That team includes Wilson’s longtime collaborators Wirlie “Optimas Pryme” Morris and Greg Pagani as well as Edwin “Lil Eddie” Serrano and Emile Ghantous. Also contributing co-writes on several tracks is Wilson’s wife Mahin.

Morris, whose connection with Wilson goes back to the latter’s The Gap Band era, co-produced more than half of Love, Charlie as well as Wilson’s megahit “You Are.” Explaining their creative bond, Wilson says, “Wirlie has done R&B, hip-hop, pop, soul, gospel and jazz … he gets me.” He also credits wife Mahin as being his “emotional barometer” when it comes to marrying heartfelt messages and melodies.

Just Charlie. Uncle Charlie. Charlie, Last Name Wilson. Throughout his tenure with Jive (folded within RCA Records in 2012), Wilson has stayed true to who he is musically and creatively—while raising the bar each time. In the early 1990s, Wilson became a friend and regular collaborator with Snoop Dogg. Their relationship provided Wilson with access to many artists who idolized him as well as fresh, emerging talent who have inspired him to continue pushing the limits of his own material. Wilson has since collaborated with a diverse array of artists including Kanye West, R. Kelly, Will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, T-Pain, Fantasia, Justin Timberlake and, most recently, 2Chainz on the 2012 Soul Train Awards.

“Working with these artists allows me to not be locked in a time capsule,” says Wilson, “It opens the door for me to be a part of the contemporary music scene.”

Initially signed to MCA and then Interscope as a solo artist, Wilson has come a long way from the highs of his The Gap Band heyday to the lows of his alcohol and drug addictions. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native formed the pivotal R&B funk trio with brothers Ronnie and Robert. Raised by a minister father and mother who served as the state’s minister of music, the siblings hit the charts running in the late ‘70s and ‘80s with a string of hits. These included “Outstanding,” “You Dropped a Bomb on Me,” “Yearning For Your Love,” “Early in the Morning,” “I Don’t Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance (Oops Up Side Your Head),” “Party Train,” “Wednesday Lover” and “All of My Love.” The group retired in 2010.

Working past his addictions, Wilson—sober now for 18 years—signed with Jive in 2004 after landing his first No. 1 Billboard Urban AC hit in 2000, “Without You.” His gold-certified Jive debut, 2005’s Charlie Last Name Wilson, yielded a top 15 R&B single via the title track. Uncle Charlie arrived in 2009, garnering the artist two Grammy nominations: Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the hit single “There Goes My Baby.” A year later, Wilson stepped back up to the plate with Just Charlie and his biggest hit to date, “You Are.” After 13 consecutive weeks at No. 1, the song scored two Grammy nods for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance. Also in 2009, he was named Billboard’s No. 1 Adult Artist and his single, “You Are” the No. 1 Adult R&B Song that same year. In addition to his six Grammy nominations Wilson is a recipient of the 2005 BMI Icon Award, the 2009 Soul Train Icon Award and will be honored with Living Legend Award by the Trumpet Awards in January, 2013.

“I started late in the game as a solo act,” reflects Wilson. “I came out of the toilet to have a solo career that no one thought would ever happen. Now I’m on the other side of the finish line … and still have something to sing about. I’m blessed to be standing strong from back in the day.”

Still burning rubber on stage as well, the energetic Wilson averages 75-100 shows a year between concert tours, festivals and private events. He also finds time to give back. Wilson remains committed to promoting awareness and educating the male community about prostate cancer. A survivor of a disease that afflicts one in six American men—and one in three African-American men—Wilson became a spokesperson for the Prostate Cancer Foundation in 2008. In April 2012 he announced his partnership with Janssen Biotech to launch the company’s Making Awareness A Priority (M.A.P.) campaign. The program brings together leading voices in advocacy and health education through live events in select cities across the country (www.myprostatecancerroadmap.com).

Now preparing for the release of Love, Charlie, Wilson says the concept behind the album can be summed up in one sentence: “The whole world needs inspiration.” Better yet, the whole world needs Charlie Wilson.

P Music Group Signs Latin R&B Duo Solero

P Music Group is preparing for the launch of an exciting new Latin R&B duo, Solero.    In an effort to give the music industry and the consumer a taste of these talented young singer/songwriters, P Music has released their promotional YouTube video for “Crying For You” which can be viewed below.

Brothers, Jean and Jonathan Solero, are natives of Bayamón, Puerto Rico.  “2012 was an exciting year for us and we can’t wait to release our debut album which is almost completed,“ stated Jean.   “P Music Group signed us and the next thing we knew we were on stage with the incomparable Charlie Wilson at the Essence Music Festival.

“We are excited about the release of the “Crying For You” video.  We hope it will give people an idea of what we can do.”

“We discovered Solero after viewing their YouTube version of Charlie Wilson’s Grammy-nominated hit single, “You Are” in Spanish” stated P Music Group President/CEO, Michael Paran.  “We were so impressed with their talent that we arranged to have them perform that song with Charlie during his much heralded performance at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans last July. “

“Performing at the Essence Music Festival as part of Charlie’s incredible show was both an honor and blessing for us,” says Jonathan.  “R&B music has influenced us all our lives but performing to over 60,000 people in the Super Dome and seeing them react to our version of “You Are” was pure magic.

Solero has also received rave reviews from the Latin music community.  Oscar Serrano member of the Grammy Award-winning Puerto Rican based group, Grupo Manía, said "Wow Wow! Solero is amazing, completely innovative. They have all the musical qualities of elite artists. I honestly love their concept.”

“Solero’s musical style is an innovative mixture of traditional R&B and Pop which includes some soulful ballads and mid-tempo songs which we believe will showcase their strong vocal abilities in both English and Spanish,” continued Paran.
