Black Enterprise Magazine Celebrates 35 Years

With its August 2005 issue, BLACK ENTERPRISE (BE) begins its 35th year as the nation's premier business and investment resource for African Americans. When BLACK ENTERPRISE launched its first issue in August of 1970, founder & publisher Earl G. Graves Sr. noted that "lacking capital, managerial and technical knowledge --and crippled by prejudice-- the minority businessman has been effectively kept out of the American marketplace." Thirty-five years later, Black executives, many identified early in their careers as rising stars by BE, have gained a solid foothold in the senior leadership of the nation's major public corporations, with more than 20 earning the once-unreachable CEO title. In 1973, BE began to rank America 's largest Black-owned companies, eventually establishing the BE 100s as the pinnacle of Black entrepreneurial success. To date, four BE 100s companies have surpassed the billion-dollar revenue milestone. Levels of success, power, and wealth once deemed impossible by people of color have been attained by the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Ken Chenault, Colin Powell, and the late Reginald F. Lewis. In the anniversary features "Then & Now" and "An Agenda for Black America." The August issue of BLACK ENTERPRISE is on newsstands now. powered by UnityFirst.com

Billboard/AURN R&B Hip-Hop Conference Hits Atlanta

By Tyriq Henderson

The Billboard/AURN R&B Hip-Hop Conference is the prem

iere event for the industry's who's who to network, share knowledge and discover new talent! The 6th Annual Conference & Awards Show was held in its new location, Atlanta, & feature savvy speakers, must-attend pa nels, skills-sharpening workshops, artist showcases, a stellar Awards Show line-up and more!

Now in its 6th year, the Billboard/AURN R&B Hip-Hop Conference and Awards brings together the music professionals that help to create, produce, promote and distribute the hottest genre on the charts today. Attendees include over 700 industry players including agents, artists, managers, producers, press and record label executives. The event was 3 days packed with conference sessions, artist showcases, networking opportunities and, of course, the awards program.

Although Billboard pulled out the red carpet for their event and hospitality was great at Compound, there seemed to be a slight disappointment by attendees.

Angela Benton was in town for another event and opted to pay her way into the event, but was very surprised by the lack of celebrity attendance. "My image of the awards, especially BILLBOARD, left a lot undone". The laid back style of the show, with a small stage set up in the middle of a dance floor at Compound, left the speakers and presenters having to talk over hundreds of socializing people, with many attendees walking in and out of the presentation at will.

While BlackAtlanta.com did advertise for the function and did attend the show, some of our staff attended the event and had a great evening. It was good to see the Yin Yang Twins perform up close and personal, as well as one of our favorites, George Clinton of Parliament walking around during the show. Russ Parr did a good job as master of ceremonies. Overall, Billboard hung in there with the many conferences in town and we hope to have them back next year.

Top winners for the night included Usher and 50 Cent. For a full list of winners, please check BillBoard's web site at http://www.billboardevents.com/billboardevents/rb/2005/finalists.jsp
